Musical students help celebrate Adelaide Town Hall reopening
Adelaide High School bands will share their passion for music with the local community when the Adelaide Town Hall reopens this Friday.
Performing on the Town Hall balcony, the bands will play different styles ranging from jazz, funk, blues and contemporary, with members of the public invited to watch and listen from the footpath below.
Lord Mayor of Adelaide Sandy Verschoor said she was looking forward to the lunch time performance.
“The Adelaide Town Hall is a beautiful public building that has played host to a vast array of events throughout its history, from weddings to performing arts, corporate events and of course music, among many, many others.
“In response to the restrictions on non-essential indoor gatherings during the COVID-19 pandemic, we had to close the venue for close to three months. Now that restrictions are starting to lift, we are very pleased that we’ve been able to reopen and host smaller events that comply with the current limits.
“It’s wonderful to be able to welcome the students from Adelaide High to the Town Hall to give this grand building a warm and lively reopening while bringing music to the streets below.
“Being a UNESCO City if Music, it seems only fitting that we celebrate the reopening of the Adelaide Town Hall with a dynamic musical performance by some of our talented young musicians.
“I would encourage anyone looking for a historic venue filled with atmosphere to consider making a booking at the Adelaide Town Hall.”
Students in the ensembles range from years 8 – 12 and rehearse weekly. Each ensemble – Big Band, and Jazz Band - has their own student leader who has rehearsed the group and selected the repertoire in readiness for performances.
Jazz Band has named themselves the ‘Barton Bunch’, named after student leader Jack Barton. They play a mixed variety of genres, are very entertaining and totally student driven. This ensemble has Year 12 students involved and many will be assessed as part of their SACE music studies.
Due to COVID-19 performance restrictions, the Adelaide High music students have been looking at innovative ways to share their talents with the local community. The students embraced the opportunity to perform on the Town Hall balcony as a chance to give the public a feel-good experience.
“These Adelaide High School bands are excited to be a part of the Adelaide Town Hall reopening now restrictions have been lifted and are looking forward to having the local community gather and hear their music on Friday,” said Tim Moors, a member of Adelaide High’s music staff.
“It’s a great opportunity for the students because they haven’t been able to perform all year. They are so thrilled to finally perform and share all their hard work at a historic venue in the City of Adelaide.”
Year 11 student Gabriella said that she was excited to be performing where the Beatles stood.
“The first thing I thought about was the Beatles and the Beatle mania when they came to Adelaide and stood on the Town Hall balcony. We’ll be performing ‘I Saw Her Standing There’ in recognition.
Year 12 student Jack is very happy to be performing again.
“Great, a gig! We haven’t had an opportunity to perform this year and I’m really excited.”
The Adelaide High School Big Band and Jazz Band will perform on the balcony of the Adelaide Town Hall, Friday 5 June from 12-1pm.
