Temporarily closing a road or portion of a road to vehicular traffic adds vibrancy and excitement to an event. While the City of Adelaide (CoA) must balance the needs of traffic and commuters, surrounding businesses and residents with event requirements, temporary road closures are often granted for:

  • events and festivals
  • official openings /launches
  • street parties
  • some marches/parades.

The application process

All event organisers are eligible to apply for a temporary road closure as a part of their event.

In order for the CoA to meet its statutory requirements, applications for road closures should be received at least three months prior to the scheduled event date. Major complex events require a lead time of at least six months.

An application for an event that proposes to close a road for more than 24 hours should be submitted with a minimum of five months’ notice. If the road closure is proposed to be in place for over 24 hours, CoA will present a report to the Council for event approval or otherwise. Further details regarding this particular process will be advised by the Event Facilitator.

Public Consultation

Road closures for events require public consultation under the Local Government Act. The public consultation will be open for 21 days and be run on Councils Your Say Adelaide website (amongst other locations). The outcomes of the public consultation process will determine whether the event can be approved or otherwise.

Road closure fees and costs

The fee for road closure is $748.00 including GST as per the City of Adelaide’s current fees and charges schedule. Not-for-profit organisations will not be charged with this application fee.

Associated costs

If your road closure is approved, a notice of the closure/s must be published in the Public Notices of the Advertiser newspaper. The cost of the notice is the responsibility of the applicant.

Fees also apply for Operational Services delivered by Council and costs are set based on individual road closure requirements.

In order to conduct your road closure, you will be required to engage the services of a Traffic Management Contractor to manage and implement the road closures. All fees associated with this are to be worn by the Event Organiser.

Other services that may attract a fee to the event organiser include:

  • installation of reserved on-street parking (Temporary Parking Controls)
  • infrastructure erected inside the road closure such as marquees, staging, scaffolding
  • site hire fees for the Adelaide Park Lands.

Ready to apply?

The use of roads for events is subject to conditions of hire. It is important as an event organiser to understand the conditions required for your event.
