Hindley Street Revitalisation
Project status - detailed design in progress
Why are we doing this?
Hindley Street was last upgraded in 1999. It is in need of a refresh that puts people first as there is eight times more pedestrian traffic than cars at peak times.
The section of Hindley Street between King William Street and Morphett Street will be upgraded with a $15M budget for design and construction, to be supplemented by asset renewal funding.
The upgrade will:
- provide a new, high-quality street environment and experience, with design features to create shade, widen footpaths, and create a safer street environment.
- complement recent upgrades undertaken in the west end precinct, including Hindley Street west (near the UniSA City West campus), Bank Street, Gresham Street and Peel Street.
- present opportunity to encourage renewed business investment in this precinct
Hindley Street is the City of Adelaide’s premier night life and entertainment precinct. It is an important east-west spine. Laneways running north-south connecting to the Adelaide Railway station, Riverbank and Central Market precincts connect the CBD to the west end of the city.
What are we doing?
The project will upgrade and install a variety of new design features to improve the amenity of the street and user experience.
These features include:
- Improving the Leigh Street and Bank Street intersection to better support pedestrian movement to and from Adelaide Railway Station.
- Widening footpaths and decluttering.
- Creating more space for outdoor dining to encourage active daytime businesses.
- Improving street lighting and CCTV.
- Planting new trees and greening to provide shade and amenity to help stimulate daytime activity.
- Installing new street furniture, road pavements and mix of materials used for a fresh, exciting new look.
Design principles will underpin the Hindley Street upgrade.
When are we doing it?
Detailed design is expected to be released in October 2024.
Construction is expected to commence in early 2025.
