Sport and recreation in Adelaide
When Colonel Light planned the city of Adelaide in 1837, the health and wellbeing of its inhabitants was top of mind. Set against the River Torrens, he surrounded the city with 900 hectares of Park Lands, creating a place for locals and visitors sport and recreational activities.
Thanks to the City of Adelaide, Light’s vision continues today. There are over 207 hectares of sporting open space covering a range of sports, ages and abilities. Many sporting clubs and organisations lease facilities, while the council maintains walking and cycling trails, running loops, and provides free netball, basketball and tennis courts you can book and use.
