CEO Statement – Market Square Update

The content of this media release is over six months old and may no longer be current.

I wanted to take this opportunity to provide the community with a brief update on the progress of the Market Square project.

The redevelopment is progressing well and early works commenced in late June.

Central Market Arcade traders were provided notice to vacate the premises by 27 June 2022 in order for ICD Property to commence the redevelopment and to ensure site safety and mitigate operational risks.

ICD Property commenced works on-site on 25 June 2022 which included demolition works within the Victoria Square Link. This included the eastern portion of the structure together with service shutdowns and relocations. Importantly this includes the construction of an interim sally port for the Courts Administration Authority and the State’s criminal courts to maintain critical operations.

Early construction mitigation measures have been implemented to support the market district and the Adelaide Central Market including the delivery of UPark Andrew, precinct wayfinding and new on-street loading arrangements.

Demolition and associated works within the Victoria Square Link are underway and further demolition of the remaining Arcade will continue in stages over the coming months.

Delays and/or impacts alleged on ABC radio this morning, quite simply have not occurred.

This project is a city-defining development for Adelaide that will breathe new life and vibrancy into the precinct.

Market Square is going to deliver enormous economic benefits for the city and create more than 1,000 new jobs and generate an overall boost of $135 million to the South Australian economy and support an additional 1 million visitors a year.
