Historic Hutt Street Audio Trail

1 to 31 May

The City of Adelaide is celebrating Hutt Street this History Festival with the Historic Hutt Street Trail, a 1 km self-guided audio walking trail. 

From 19th century houses to historic pubs and shops, there are 18 stops on the trail. Scan the QR code at each stop to be transported back in time and listen to the stories behind current-day favourite spots such as Chianti, the Havelock Hotel, The Naval, Military and Air Force Club and more.

This engaging experience for visitors and locals showcases the street in a vibrant and unique way where you can enjoy one or two stops of the past or make a day of it and explore the entire historical walk.

The audio tour has been recorded to make it accessible for anyone visiting the street.

Drawing Competition

Hutt Street and its surrounds are full of heritage gems which showcase Adelaide’s history. This History Festival, the City of Adelaide invites families to explore all that Hutt Street has to offer where primary school aged children can enter our drawing competition!

The competition is open to all primary school aged children and invites them to draw What they like most about Hutt Street for the chance to win:

First prize:

$50 voucher to use at Naughty Nanna’s Cookies on Hutt Street

Second prize:

$30 voucher to use at The Sugar Man on Hutt Street

Competition is open from 1 to 31 May 2023. All entries must be submitted in person at the Hutt Street Library. Terms and conditions apply.

Competition Terms and Conditions

  • These are the Terms and Conditions for The History Festival on Hutt Street Drawing Competition (“the Competition”).
  • The promoter is the Corporation of the City of Adelaide (Council).
  • To enter this Competition, participants must complete the printed competition entry form that is downloadable online here or available in-person from Hutt Street Library and selected cafés along Hutt Street.
  • Once complete, competition forms must be returned in-person to the Hutt Street Library, located at 235 Hutt Street, Adelaide.
  • Entry in the Competition is free of charge.
  • In order to be eligible to enter the Competition, entrants must:
    • be aged between 3 years and 12 years old;
    • be a South Australian resident (“Eligible Entrant”)
  • One entry is permitted per individual, and each entry will have an equal chance of winning.
  • As entrants are below 18 years of age, a parent or guardian must agree to co-sign on behalf of the entrant to assist.
  • The Competition and Promotion Period opens on Monday 1 May 2023 at 9.00am ACST and closes on Wednesday 31 May 2023 at 9.00am ACST (“Promotion Period”).
  • The prize pool consists of x1 $50 voucher to use at Naughty Nanna’s Cookies located at 237 Hutt Street, Adelaide and x1 $30 voucher to use at The Sugar Man located at 197 Hutt Street, Adelaide.
  • Prizes are not redeemable for cash.
  • The winners will be handpicked by the City of Adelaide. Selection will take place on Friday 2 June 2023 at 25 Pirie Street, Adelaide.
  • The winners will be notified by City of Adelaide via phone or email by 5:00pm ACDT on the day of the draw through the details which they entered the Competition.
  • If the winner does not respond within 24 hours, or is unable to accept the prize, another winner will be chosen from the Eligible Entrants.
  • Upon confirmation with the winners, City of Adelaide will distribute the prize.
  • Decisions made in relation to any aspect of this Competition are final and no further correspondence will be entered into.
  • City of Adelaide and its subsidiaries staff and their immediate families are not eligible to enter the Competition.
  • This promotion is in no way sponsored, endorsed or administered by, or associated with Facebook or Instagram. As an entrant, you completely release Facebook and Instagram.
  • City of Adelaide makes no representation, expressly or implied, as to the quality, reliability or suitability of the prizes and expressly disclaims any liability. Any problems associated with the prizes should be brought to the attention of the respective supplier of the service.
  • Each winner and their guest/s as applicable agree to comply with the terms and conditions applicable to the issue and use of vouchers from the voucher providers.
  • By entering into this Competition the entrants acknowledge and agree that the personal information they provide may be used by the Council for future marketing purposes.
  • Entrants also acknowledge and agree that their artwork may be placed on display by Council as part of future promotions and/or art installations.
  • Should the prize become unavailable due to the COVID-19 pandemic, City of Adelaide will use its best endeavours to provide the winner with an alternative prize.

Lego Club

Every Wednesday 3:45 to 4:45 pm


The Hutt Street Library is a place of wonder. Far beyond books, the Hutt Street Library has a Lego Club where children can get acquainted with the building blocks of imagination.

During the month of May we invite children visiting Hutt Street to attend the Lego Club and build historical elements they see on Hutt Street out of Lego. Creations will be on display in the library for the entire month of May and parents and family members can visit to see this unique exhibition.

The free Lego Club is a great way for kids to use their imagination through play and meet new friends.

Historical Walking Trails


Historic Hutt Street Trail

Distance: Approximately 1 km

Duration: Please allow 45 minutes to 1 hour to complete.

Hutt Street is one of the original public streets of Adelaide. It is named after Sir William Hutt MP (1801-1882), one of the original Commissioners appointed during 1835 to undertake certain administrative duties in connection with the new colony of South Australia.

The map takes in 20 significant sites along Hutt Street and an audio tour has been recorded to make it accessible for anyone visiting the street.

Village in the City Trail

Distance: Approximately 2.6 km 

Duration: Please allow 2 hours to complete.

In the late 19th century, people from all social levels lived in the south eastern corner of the city. The wealthy occupied mansions on East and South terraces, the growing middle class lived in Victorian villas in Halifax and Gilles streets, while the intervening small cottages were filled by workers who were able to walk to work. Examine how different socioeconomic groups lived side by side through built heritage.

The map takes in 17 significant sites within the South East Corner.

Historic Elm Carriageway and South Park Lands trail

Distance: Approximately 2.6 km

Duration: Please allow 2 hours to complete.

This trail leads you along the historic elm carriageway, which has been a fixture of the Adelaide Park Lands since the 1800s. Follow the trail beyond the carriageway past the Adelaide Himeji Garden, a beautifully manicure Japanese pocket of the park lands, and through to the modern Pityarilla Activity Hub.
