Sundays In The Market District - Expressions Of Interest Now Open

City of Adelaide’s call for Expressions of Interest seeking unique, exciting dynamic and fun ideas around creating regular events and activities on Sundays in the Market District is now open.

After extensive consultation with local businesses, traders, residents and visitors to the Market District, Council is now planning to help increase Sunday activities in the area to bring more life and colour to the district.

Expressions of Interest could comprise one street or location in the district, or could be an element of a street or location, or anything in between, and collaboration between existing businesses and potential new business ideas are all encouraged.

Lord Mayor Martin Haese said the Market District is an area of the City which is already active during usual opening hours and now there are opportunities to build on its popularity by offering alternative things to do and see outside of core trading times.

“There is no doubt the iconic Market District, including the Adelaide Central Market, Central Market Arcade, Market Plaza, Chinatown and Gouger Street, holds a place in many South Australian hearts, and we want to further add to this by encouraging people to look beyond the market and surrounding businesses to come up with ideas for attracting more visitors to the area on Sundays,” said Martin.

“Fresh and innovative ideas that complement the already wonderful offering of the district are encouraged, to enhance, rather than compete with what’s already established.

“There is so much potential including finding ways to leverage off major events. We have the Lunar New Year celebrations, Tour Down Under, Adelaide Fringe, Adelaide 500 to name just a few. We want people to be inspired and think of ways their ideas build on the existing offering to further enhance and enliven the area.

“It is a true opportunity to be innovative and creative, with a wonderful canvas on which to frame other activities, I really do encourage people to consider how they might become part of this important district,” he said.

The Market District is distinctive, authentic and diverse, and alive with history and culture that creates a point of difference for Adelaide compared with other Australian Capital Cities.

Council wants to hear from people with innovative and inspired ideas about ways to enliven the area, be they established business operators, community or not for profit groups, or just people with great business ideas, to best capitalise on the District’s uniqueness.

Expressions of interest will remain open until 29 March 2016 at 2pm.
