Nominations now open for City of Adelaide 2017 Sports Awards

Nominations are now open for the City of Adelaide 2017 Sports Awards which celebrates those who have encouraged and inspired people to get involved in sport, as well as those who have been successful in their chosen sport.

This is the third year that the awards have been held and is part of the City of Adelaide’s goal to encourage more people to be active in the city. The awards ceremony will be held during National Volunteer Week (8-14 May) and at the Adelaide Town Hall for the very first time.

City of Adelaide Lord Mayor Martin Haese said that a liveable city is one that supports the wellbeing and resilience of its community.

“The sports awards recognise the achievements and the contributions of those individuals and organisations that make a difference to the health of the people in our city and North Adelaide by supporting them to participate in sport, or by being a role model.

“I encourage you to acknowledge your favourite event, club, athlete, coach or official and recognise their hard work and contributions to physical health by nominating them for an award.”

There are seven award categories:

• Beyond Bank Event/Program of the Year
• H.I.Lighting Coach or Official of the Year
• Lord Mayor’s Sports Volunteer of the Year
• Clubs SA Club of the Year
• Rebel Sport Athlete of the Year
• Back In Motion Contribution to Lifelong Physical Activity
• Inclusive Sport SA Champion of Inclusion Award.

The Champion of Inclusion award, sponsored by Inclusive Sport SA, is a new award that recognises an individual, group, program, event or design that increases opportunities for participation, and creates a welcoming environment for people who may be disadvantaged, disengaged or marginalised.

Award winners in 2016 included Torrens Parkrun, tennis coach Rohan Fisher, Norwood Swimming Club who are based at the Adelaide Aquatic Centre, the Prince Alfred Old Scholars Football Club, and Athletics SA who established the Women’s Recreational Running Network, a free running group specifically for women.

The inaugural Lord Mayor’s Volunteer of the Year award recipient was Don Slater, volunteer treasurer, secretary and competitions’ manager for the SA Metropolitan Cricket Association. Sixteen year old Ella Adams received the Rebel Sport Athlete of the Year award and has represented South Australia and Australia in golf tournaments around the world.

Nominations are open now until the 10th April. The awards will be held on the 11 May and hosted by the Lord Mayor, with Sunday Mail sports columnist Ben Hook the event’s MC.
