History Festival

South Australia’s History Festival celebrates the state’s history through walks, talks, exhibitions, workshops and more.

The festival is one of South Australia's largest community events and promotes the State's history via wonderful collections, places and stories.

The history of the History Festival

Presented by the History Trust of South Australia, the History Festival began in 2004 as SA History Week. Each year the event has grown, becoming a month-long festival in 2011.

Each May, you can explore history through hundreds of events held throughout Adelaide, North Adelaide and across the state. Events range from talks to tours; walks to workshops; exhibitions to special events.

The City of Adelaide has been one of the major sponsors of South Australia’s History Festival since its inception. It also provides a range of free events for the public such as the “Celebrating 30 years of the Heritage Incentives Scheme” bus tour (2018) and the Market Meander walking tour (2017).

In 2020, South Australia’s History Festival was sadly cancelled due to COVID19. However in 2021, it will once again be held in May.
