A city guide to keeping fit & healthy

Whether you live, work or visit the city – here’s a bunch of free and low-cost activities you can tap into to help you achieve your fitness goals!

Walking is excellent low-impact exercise and the Adelaide Park Lands are packed with tracks and trails to explore at your own pace.

If you find fitness inspiration teaming up, join one of the free Heart Foundation Walking Groups in the city and North Adelaide. Share stories while you stroll, and make new friends!

Stretch your legs and get to know Adelaide a little better on one of the city’s many self-guided walks or tours. For some fit family time, grab the kids and head to a city park or playspace and swap the bench for the slide! If you're a pooch parent - take your furry friend out for a play and some socialising at one of the city's dog parks.

City joggers are spoilt for choice, with loads of running circuits.

A good one to try is the 2.2km tree-lined Uni Loop. With distance markers every 200m, it’s great for keeping you on track.

Mix up the pavement pounding with some upper-body work. The Victoria Park Fitness Trail is a 1.9km unsealed circuit inside open park land with well-equipped fitness stations along the way.

The Adelaide Park Lands are a treasure trove of cycling trails too.

The scenic River Torrens Linear Park Trail runs from the sea to the hills, winding through the city between Bonython Park and Elder Park where you can enjoy the beautiful Riverbank precinct. As a shared use trail, keep an eye out for walkers and runners.

For an adrenalin hit, check out the criterium racing and pedal prix events at the Victoria Park Criterium Track. This 1.1km-1.4km circuit caters for all bike levels, from racers to weekend warriors.

No wheels? No excuse! Hire an Adelaide Free Bike from over 20 locations in the city and spend an afternoon exploring the city centre or go off-road in the Park Lands. Hire comes with a helmet and lock so you can park while you stop for a healthy snack!

The Adelaide Aquatic Centre has a gym and 3 pools - so you can add variety to your land-based exercise program all in the one venue!

Group aquatic classes are a great way to meet friends and they’re low/no-impact - so ideal for seniors, pregnant women and people rehabilitating from injury.

Visiting town and want to maintain your ‘keep fit’ mojo?

Hit the links right here in the city! In the Northern Parklands, just a few minutes from the city centre and open 7 days, the North Adelaide Golf Course has a championship-style South course and welcomes starters or those after a short game on its North Course and Par 3 layouts.

If you work in town, make the most of  balmy summer evenings and schedule a round after 5pm. The North and South Courses open till 8pm in January and 7.30pm in February.

The Adelaide Aquatic Centre gym is super-equipped for solo sessions but if you prefer to pal up for your work-outs, try a group class like Yoga-lates (a Yoga/Pilates fusion class) or DrumFit - high-energy, loud and great for stress relief!

The city’s three community centres offer a range of exercise classes. Try Yoga for free at Adelaide South West Community Centre, or Pilates is just $5.00.

If you run a community sporting group that uses the city’s outdoor spaces, you might be eligible to get a little funding boost for something like new uniforms, equipment or volunteer training.
