Joint Media Release

The State Government will contribute $6.7 million towards the redevelopment of Narnungga/Park 25 in the west Park Lands.

Narnungga/Park 25 will provide a high-quality formal park with amenities and attractions to offer a place of respite for staff and visitors of the new Royal Adelaide Hospital as well as supporting the new UniSA and Adelaide University facilities on North Terrace.

The funding follows $4.5 million granted to the City of Adelaide for the enhancement of Pityarilla/Park 19 (Marshmallow Park) in the south Park Lands.

Funding will be provided to the City of Adelaide to deliver the project based on the success of the collaborative model under which Pityarilla/Park 19 is being delivered.

Background

In 2014 the State Government committed $20 million towards investment into the Park Lands over four years. The funding supports key growth targets to attract more people to inner city living.

Narnungga/Park 25 has been identified as a key strategic project aimed at supporting an increased population of workers, students, residents and visitors in the City’s north-west.

With over $2 billion worth of state and private investment in the surrounding area, Narnungga/Park 25 will soon be under pressure to provide quality green open space that caters to a diverse user group and meets the demands of an increased population.

Designs will take into consideration the adjacent redevelopment of the South Australian Cricket Association facility and seek to provide an integrated outcome that encourages public engagement with the formal sporting component of the park.

The State Government will remain involved and provide guidance throughout the project through representation on a Project Control Group.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Planning John Rau

The State Government is pleased to again be teaming up with the City of Adelaide to deliver high-quality and well-designed open space in the Park Lands.

Continued investment in the Park Lands, and in particular Narnungga/Park 25, supports the State Government’s investment in the new Royal Adelaide Hospital, a significant public asset for South Australians.

Preliminary concepts for Narnungga /Park 25 are currently being developed in consultation with the community. I encourage the public to voice their opinions on what they would like to see at Narnungga/Park 25.

Quotes attributable to Lord Mayor Martin Haese

We continue to support our collaboration with the State Government in enhancing the Adelaide Park Lands.

As we encourage further residential growth in the city, new residents in the city’s north-west will increasingly rely on areas of the Park Lands such as this for their relaxation and recreation.

This project will add great amenity to Narnungga/Park 25, and is in line with the desired outcomes of the Adelaide Park Lands Management Strategy.

We thank the State Government for their investment and will work to deliver the project successfully as we are doing currently with the Pityarilla/Park 19 upgrade.
