Victoria Square/Tarntanyangga will rock out this Thursday 20 July at lunch time as part of the Umbrella Winter City Sounds festival with a free outdoor gig.

Well-known local band Cosmo Thundercat, along with Adelaide four-piece indie rock band The New Yorks, will hit the stage from 12 Noon at Rock in the Square, presented by the City of Adelaide and Music SA.

Food trucks including Soza’s Srilankan Street Food, Taco Cat, Chimichurri Grill and Signore will be on site to keep those hunger pangs at bay.

There will also be a one-off Merch Market, operated by Music SA staff and volunteers, where local bands will be selling T-shirts, CDs and other merchandise.

City of Adelaide Lord Mayor Martin Haese urged everyone to come along and show their support for local music.

“After a very successful first year in 2016, Umbrella Winter City Sounds returns with over 300 live music events in over 100 venues and locations across the city and the state.

“It’s a collaboration between Music SA, the State Government’s Live Music Fund, Council, and so many other partners, to encourage people out of hibernation to enjoy our city’s wonderful musicians and live music venues during winter.

“As a UNESCO City of Music, Adelaide is recognised world-wide for its vibrant music culture and its support for the music industry. Adelaide has a rich tradition of supporting and showcasing the arts and as well as supporting live music through Umbrella, we’ve also made changes to our policies to make it easier for venues to host live music.

“Spending your lunchtime listening to some top local music while enjoying food from local vendors is a great way to show your support for Adelaide’s musicians and live music scene.”

Music SA’s General Manager Lisa Bishop highlighted the importance of music in the CBD and not just within the usual venues.

Umbrella: Winter City Sound’s Rock in the Square is a crucial part of this year’s festival, delivering an extraordinary live musical experience in the heart of Adelaide’s CBD and offering everyone the opportunity to discover some great South Australian music.

“Music SA is really looking forward to running a special band merchandise market, with a wide selection of clothes, CDs and vinyl – the perfect opportunity to get in early and buy your Christmas presents in support of SA musicians.”

Rock in the Square starts at 12 Noon and will run until 2pm on Thursday 20 July. For more information please visit umbrellaadelaide.com.au/directory-info/rock-in-the-square/
