Christmas Decorations in the City

Find Christmas cheer and joy across the city with sparkling lights, colourful decorations and the arrival of all of your favourite festive characters.

Sparkling lights

Each night as the sun goes down the lights turn on in the city. Perhaps the most well-known of all the lights is the magical lighting display on the Giant Christmas Tree in Victoria Square / Tarntanyangga. Under the tree the Victoria Square fountains illuminate different colours while just a few steps away you'll find red and green hues on the facade of the Adelaide Town Hall.

New to Adelaide's Christmas Festival in 2021, two Bauble Canopy light installations have popped up in Peel Street and Vaughan Place. During the day the baubles change colour as the sun moves and at night they come to life in a dazzling lighting display.

You'll find other illuminated Christmas decorations throughout the city, including:

  • Illuminated reindeer in Brougham Gardens
  • Illuminated decorations in Wellington Square
  • Illuminated Christmas tree in Hurtle Square

Flowers and garden beds

In the lead up to the festive season, the City of Adelaide horticulture team plant over 5,000 red and white petunias all around the city. You'll find these petunias blooming in flower beds in Hindmarsh Square, Light Square and Victoria Square. An extra 1,500 petunias are planted in potted petunia trees that pop up throughout the city on O'Connell Street, Melbourne Street, Pirie Street, Flinders Street and Hutt Street throughout the festive season.

Giant books, presents, sleigh and window displays

Bigger is better when it comes to Christmas and this year this city is home to giant books, giant presents, a life sized sleigh made of LEGO and impressive window displays.

Walking along North Terrace, it's hard to miss the giant Christmas books out the front of the State Library of South Australia and the South Australian Museum. The same can be said for Rundle Mall with large window displays dotted throughout the Mall displaying Christmas decorations and more. And over in Light Square you'll find two giant light up presents.

A fan favourite every year, the life sized sleigh made of LEGO is back and this year it's calling the North Adelaide Village home. Marvel at the impressive LEGO masterpiece and enjoy the opportunity to take Santa's reigns and sit on the sleigh.

You'll also be able to post letters to Santa this year at two mailboxes - one in the Adelaide Town Hall and the other at the North Adelaide Library.

Banners and balcony bows

Along the streets of the city and North Adelaide, banners and flags have been installed spreading hope, joy, peace and cheer this festive season. Buildings throughout the city are also getting into the festive season with big red bows lining building balconies.
