Houssam Abiad is a South Australian serial entrepreneur, a Councillor and the Former Deputy Lord Mayor for the City of Adelaide with a thirst for seeing his community thrive.
Though born in Adelaide, Houssam spent most of his life in Lebanon, returning to Australia at age 19 with his family after living through a civil war. Houssam is so appreciative of the opportunities Adelaide has given him; he has spent his time in Australia implementing his remarkable passions for business and community, fostering growth wherever a possibility may lie.
A dedicated and goal-oriented student, Houssam pursued a double degree in Biomedical Engineering and Health Sciences at Flinders University and graduated with Honours. Houssam has also completed the Australian Institute of Company Directors course and is a Fellow at the Governors Leadership Foundation.
Houssam has established companies and businesses in the telecommunication, hospitality, digital marketing and real estate property development. His entrepreneurship has seen him win many awards including the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2011 Finalist and the Australian Leadership Award at the Future Summit 2010.
Houssam actively fosters community growth with his involvements over the years in not-for-profit boards as the Chairperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs - Council for Australian Arab Relations, Chairperson of the Australia Day Council, Migrant Resource Centre Board, Australian Refugee Association, United for Peace and Engineers without Borders. These involvements have seen him win a number of high profile national and South Australian awards, including the Pride of Australia Medal 2007 First Prize for Peace and the Governor’s Multicultural Award in 2008.
Houssam was elected to the City of Adelaide in 2010 and strives to offer the Adelaide business community and residents fresh, innovative and “big picture” solutions. He has chaired the Finance & Business Services Committee for the City of Adelaide, and serves on the Development Assessment Panel for the City of Adelaide and the Capital City Committee. He has also served on the Rundle Mall Management Board and the South Australian Motorsports Board. He thrives on the notion of ensuring Adelaide remains – and grows – as a viable option for Residents, SMEs and head offices alike.
