On 28 March 2017, Council noted the ‘Chinatown Reinvigoration Paper’ which provides background information about Chinatown. Council also noted that a proposal to reinvigorate the Chinatown precinct will be presented for consideration as part of the process for the Integrated Business Plan and Budget for 2017-18.
The administration report to Council of 28 March outlined a proposed budget for 2017/18 of $100,000 as well as funding sufficient to start capital enhancements. The intent of these funds are to enable community consultation, activation and events in the Market District (of which Chinatown is a part), improvements to shopfronts and initial capital works during 2017/18.
The intent is that a Chinatown Reinvigoration Plan is prepared during 2017/18 and delivered in partnership between local stakeholders, private building owners and the City of Adelaide over a number of years.
Intended 2017-18 activity is based on engaging local landowners and key stakeholders as whilst the City of Adelaide is responsible for the public realm, the majority of reinvigoration opportunities are reliant on building owners. A partnership approach is critical.
A media release of 28 March outlines Council’s support to start the process of reinvigorating Chinatown.
