Vision and Guiding Principles
The Central Market Arcade is one of the cornerstones of the Market District located adjacent the Sir Samuel Way law courts, Hilton Hotel Adelaide, Victoria Square and the iconic Adelaide Central Market which attracts some 8.5 million visitors each year.
The City of Adelaide has endorsed a Vision, Objectives and a set of Guiding Principles which will be used to inform the Central Market Arcade Redevelopment.
“The Central Market Arcade Redevelopment will be a catalyst for enriching the city. It will help grow what’s best about the Adelaide Central Market and Market District, into a food and wine destination of international repute, as part of a thriving mixed-use place. A place that appeals to more people, more of the time. It will help achieve Council’s vision where “Adelaide is a welcoming and dynamic city full of rich and diverse experiences.”
The Central Market Arcade Redevelopment will provide the opportunity to grow the market offering with expanded and complementary retail and market activities connecting to Victoria Square. This will support an extension of the fresh food and day-to-day retail offer with new loading facilities, increased public car parking and the potential for a range of uses at the upper levels.
The City of Adelaide is intending to retain ownership of the retail, market offering, increased public car parking and associated loading areas. The retention of these elements by the City of Adelaide will secure the future of, the adjoining Adelaide Central Market .
The Adelaide Central Market will not be redeveloped.

In addition to the Vision and Guiding Principles, a retail study has been undertaken for the Central Market Arcade redevelopment to provide guidance and aspirations for the components of the redevelopment that the City of Adelaide intends to own, namely the future retail, loading/ service areas and public car parking.
The retail study builds on the Site Vision, Redevelopment Objectives and Guiding Principles as well as previous stakeholder and community consultation. The resulting Retail Study seeks to create a City destination offering a new social and commercial heart for Adelaide. The retail offer will provide a local authentic experience showcasing the best of South Australian food and wine, supported by local history and culture as well as day to day retail services.
