Talk with a Local

About the Program

Talk with a Local is a free program that brings international students and local community members together for informal, one-on-one conversations. It’s a simple and friendly way for students to practise English and learn about life in Australia - and for volunteers to meet someone from another culture and help them feel welcome in Adelaide.

Each student is matched with a local volunteer. Pairs meet weekly for relaxed conversation. No teaching or special skills are needed—just a genuine interest in connecting with others through conversation.

For International Students

As a student you’ll be matched with a local volunteer for casual weekly chats. This is a great way to feel more confident with English and more connected to your community.

While we do our best to match students with volunteers, placements are limited and not guaranteed.

For Local Volunteers

Community members who enjoy meeting people from other cultures and want to support an international student to feel welcome while building language and cultural knowledge are encouraged to apply. You’ll be matched with an international student to meet for one hour a week, for informal and friendly conversation. This is a rewarding way to support someone settling into life in Adelaide.
