Star & Garter Hotel, Sturt Street, Adelaide 1941

The Star and Garter Inn was first licensed in 1849 and was on the western corner of Sturt Street and Frederick Street. In 1881 the building in the photograph was built a little further west (194 Sturt Street) and the hotel moved. The building was demolished in 1961.

'BIRTHDAY TOAST AT HOTEL Two Fines as Sequel
The excuse that a man had had a drink after hours at the Star and Garter Hotel, Sturt street, because it was the birthday of the licensee's husband, was offered in the Adelaide Police Court today. Nellie Maud Gillespie, licensee of the hotel, pleaded guilty before Mr. Muir head, P.M., to a charge of having unlawfully sold liquor at 10.10 p.m. on January 24, and was fined £5 with £1 5/ costs. Albert Fells, laborer, of West terrace, City, was charged with having been found unlawfully drinking in the hotel on that evening and was fined £5 with £1 costs. Mr. P. J. Christie; who appeared for both defendants, said that Fells had visited Mr. Gillespie, and toasted him when he found it was his birthday. No payment had been made for the drink.'
