The north-east corner of Wakefield and Pulteney Streets, Adelaide, in 1938. Built on the site of the Rose of Australia Hotel in 1863, the building was, shortly after this photograph was taken, to get an art deco facelift (see the next photo). It still stands and is used as backpacker accommodation. From December 1883 to March 1884 it was known as the La Mascott Hotel.

'Licensee to Pay Fine
Elizabeth Alexander, licensee at the Orient Hotel, Wakefield street, admitted in the Adelaide Police Court today that unexcepted persons had been found in the hotel premises at 10.30 p.m: on February 19. She was fined £2 with £1/5/- costs. A certificate of triviality was text granted. Miss Roma Mitchell appeared for the licensee.'
