Welcome home our Olympic heroes in Victoria Square/Tarntanyangga

A community celebration in Victoria Square/Tarntanyangga will be held to celebrate and congratulate our Olympic heroes tomorrow kicking off at 12 noon.

Everyone is invited to join City of Adelaide Lord Mayor Martin Haese, Minister for Sport, Leon Bignell and a contingent of Olympic athletes to celebrate another successful Olympic event.

Among the team of Australian athletes to head for Rio were forty-nine South Australians, the largest number of South Australians to represent Australia since the Sydney 2000 games. South Australians brought home 11 of the 29 medals won by Australian athletes.

Victoria Square/Tarntanyangga, the community heart of the city, is where the community can welcome home Australia’s top athletes from their successful Rio Olympics.

Lord Mayor Martin Haese said the event will be a wonderful opportunity for the community to show our athletes we are proud.

“Our athletes are truly inspirational, so to show them that we are grateful for all they have achieved we want as many people as possible to join us in Victoria Square/Tarntanyangga as we welcome them home,” said Martin.

“Victoria Square/Tarntanyangga celebrations start at 12 noon. There’ll be entertainment and mobile food vendors so people can buy their lunch and enjoy surroundings. We’re expecting a big crowd so get in early to secure a spot,” he said.

South Australian Police will escort the athletes from their official reception at Adelaide Oval, along King William Street to Victoria Square/Tarntanyangga.

The event will be hosted by Channel 7 and Mix 102.3 personality Mark Soderstrom with Chris Dittmar and Mark Ricciuto conducting athlete interviews as well as ensuring everyone is having fun.

There’ll be opportunities to meet the athletes and get their autographs following the official part of the celebration. For more information go to www.cityofadelaide.com.au
