Supplementary Election

The content of this media release is over six months old and may no longer be current.

City of Adelaide will be holding a supplementary election for one (1) Area Councillor following the resignation of Robert Simms.

Anyone eligible to vote or nominate as a candidate in City of Adelaide general elections is also eligible to vote or nominate in this supplementary election. However, to be able to vote or nominate, people must ensure they are enrolled on the electoral roll in the City of Adelaide.

Lord Mayor Martin Haese said it is just as important for people to vote in the supplementary election as in a full election.

“Every member of Council represents the community – this is your chance to have a say on who you want making decisions about your city.

“Time is short – the roll closes on 30 September, so whether you’re a new resident, rate payer or business owner, enrol now so you are able to vote for who you believe will make a difference to our city.”

Nominations for candidates open Thursday, 22 October and close 12 noon Thursday, 5 November.

“Councillors have very important community leadership responsibilities and have a role in policy creation regarding community development, recreation, the environment, economic development, planning, public health and safety, infrastructure development and much more,” Martin said.

“I would encourage anyone who wants to make a difference to the future of our amazing city to consider nominating for election. A term on Council is one way to make sure that community perspectives are heard and it provides a chance to influence decisions in a diverse range of areas.”

Voting material will be sent out to those registered to vote between 17 and 23 November, with voting closing at 12 noon on Monday, 7 December.

People may be eligible to enrol if they are:

  • An owner of a property
  • An owner of a business
  • An operator of a business.

Residents (citizen or non-citizen) living in a property in the City of Adelaide area are automatically enrolled to vote if they are already on the State electoral role.
