New Community Space Set To Launch

An exciting new community space that can be used for a range of programs, events and activities will be launched tomorrow with a street party to celebrate the occasion – and everyone’s invited.

The Minor Works Building located at the award-winning Ergo Apartments site has been refurbished by City of Adelaide for the community to utilise as a flexible space, every day of the week.

The street party will feature a Welcome to Country with a traditional cultural performance, live music, family entertainment and food and drinks by new local business ‘East of Norman’.

Three exciting public artworks from emerging local artist Steven Cybulka will also be celebrated on the night. Titled Transition…109.

The two storey Minor Works Building is owned by Council and was originally part of the old Sturt Street Depot – a two storey warehouse built for the City Engineer’s Department in 1939.

The downstairs Gallery Room has full kitchen facilities, while the Loft room upstairs features a cosy coffee nook. Both rooms provide exhibition space, Wi-Fi, integrated audio visual equipment and accessible features including automatic entrance door, toilets and lift.

Deputy Lord Mayor, Houssam Abiad, said the facility will be a fantastic new community asset that’s fit for a range of purposes.

“This exciting facility will be shaped by the community, it’s really up to them what programs and activities happen here, they are the curators,” said Houssam.

“In our 175th year, Council is proud to give a beautiful heritage building a new lease of life and we’re excited that the local community will get to use the space for a wide range of purposes.”

Paul Blobel, who runs East of Norman with his business partner Sebastian Russell within the Ergo site, looked forward to the opening and its potential to further contribute to the sense of community in the south west corner of the city.

“Integrating a community space within a new development like Ergo helps promote community based activities in our local area and build social connections,” said Paul.

The street party will be held in the internal street of the Ergo Apartment site between Stamford Court and Sturt Street from 6pm-9pm on Friday 16 October 2015.

The Minor Works Building is located just off of Stamford Court between Sturt Street and Wright Street and sits within the new Ergo Apartments development.
