New Community Leaders Unearthed

City of Adelaide is proud to have successfully delivered the Adelaide Community Leaders program for the second year running, with 20 local community members completing the course.

Held over 12 weeks, participants learned about leadership, project management, consultation, and worked on real projects in four areas to test out their new skills in the community. Participants were supported by facilitator Natalie Fuller from Natalie Fuller & Associates, and City of Adelaide staff, who shared knowledge and acted as mentors for each project.

The four projects the teams worked on were:

• Community Art (design and implemented street stickers promoting sustainability throughout the City and North Adelaide);
• Nature Play (providing free games box and encouraging use of the natural environment);
• Travel Behaviour Change (using social media created ‘Hidden Gems Adelaide’ promoting the places people see and enjoy when walking and cycling in the city; and
• Horticulture (created Wirrarninthi Environmental Education Trail a teacher and student educational resource and guide to park 23).

Lord Mayor Martin Haese looked forward to the successful program being run again in 2016. “This is such a great initiative for community-minded people who are interested in developing their leadership skills and we’re pleased to support it,” said Martin.

“I congratulate everyone who completed the course and thank the project mentors for taking part.” Course graduate Elena Lashchuk said it was one of the most rewarding things she had ever done.

“I loved participating in such an informative and very practical program that allowed me to get skills to lead and run projects,” said Elena. “It also provided us with the knowledge of how to overcome potential issues with our future projects and, what is more important, how to cope and where to look for assistance from the community and City of Adelaide.”
