NAIDOC Celebrations In The City

The content of this media release is over six months old and may no longer be current.

As NAIDOC Week celebrations kick off this Sunday, activities in the city will include free performances, family fun in Rundle Mall, a poster exhibition, workshops and the annual NAIDOC SA Awards.

Celebrations will commence with the 2019 Lord Mayor’s NAIDOC Morning Tea and NAIDOC SA Awards on Monday at Adelaide Town Hall.

Lord Mayor of Adelaide Sandy Verschoor welcomed everyone to attend the free community events.

“NAIDOC Week provides a great opportunity for everyone to support our local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and take part in the many celebrations around the city,” said the Lord Mayor.

“I encourage everyone to come along to Adelaide Town Hall on Monday to celebrate and recognise the achievements and contributions of the NAIDOC SA award winners and the inaugural winner of the Lord Mayor’s NAIDOC Award.”

Celebrations will continue in Rundle Mall on Tuesday with an official Kaurna Welcoming Ceremony by Jack Buckskin, native food tastings, Australian animals, hands-on workshops, and live music by the Deadly Nannas and Nathan May.

This year’s theme Voice. Truth. Treaty. aims to highlight the importance for all Australians to work together for a shared future and recognise the history of Aboriginal Australians as First Nation peoples.

“A wise woman, my nanna Mary Williams once said to me ‘without truth there cannot be justice,’” said NAIDOC SA Chairperson, Scharlene Lamont.

“This year’s theme ‘Voice Treaty Truth, let’s work together for a shared future’ empowers Aboriginal people to be able stand up, speak and tell their stories, and how the past has impacted on them and their families,” she said.

“It also gives a platform for NAIDOC and Reconciliation to come together and work together for a common goal: treaty.”
