Lord Mayor Welcomes AdeLINK Commitment

Lord Mayor Martin Haese has welcomed the Federal Opposition’s exciting announcement that it would invest $500 million towards the State Government’s AdeLINK light rail network, should it win the election.

Through the recent Light Rail Summit and the establishment of the Mayors for AdeLINK group, the Lord Mayor has lobbied for a Federal commitment to the project and congratulates the Opposition for backing light rail in Adelaide.

The investment in AdeLINK would create 2000 local jobs and help deliver city-shaping infrastructure.

The Lord Mayor said AdeLINK is vital to help ease traffic congestion and would have comprehensive economic, social and environmental benefits for the city.

“I have been vocal in my support for the AdeLINK network, as light rail is customer-focused, more efficient, environmentally friendly and can generate millions in economic benefits for the community,” said Martin.

“The city and suburbs where light rail infrastructure is built will be able to capitalise on the investment to support growth, just as other cities in Australia and across the globe have done.

“AdeLINK will be good for residents, visitors, students and local businesses in Adelaide.

“An expanded light rail network will bring people into the city comfortably and efficiently on a reliable mode of public transport, and also move them around the CBD with ease.

“Along with my fellow mayors within the Mayors for AdeLINK group, I am committed to working with State and Federal Governments on the construction of the network.

“Today’s announcement means AdeLINK is a step closer to reality and I now urge the Federal Government to make a similar commitment to light rail in Adelaide.”
