Final Stage of Rundle Mall Catenary Lighting to Start Sunday

The final stage of the installation of the catenary lighting in Rundle Mall will begin this Sunday 23 August with works continuing at times outside of the retail operational hours.

Preliminary work has been going on for the last few months, but visitors to the Mall will start to see the lighting itself being strung up across the Mall from this Sunday.

Deputy Lord Mayor Houssam Abiad said that this was an exciting time as the Rundle Mall redevelopment project neared completion.

“We have seen more than approximately half a billion dollars in private investment in the Mall since the commencement of the Rundle Mall Masterplan, including new international and local retailers as well as improvements by existing retailers and exciting changes in connecting laneways.

“Rundle Mall is Adelaide’s premier shopping destination and meeting place – it’s the State’s most popular attraction, drawing more than 461,000 visitors a week.

“The floating lighting is the final part of the $30 million upgrade which has given the Mall a fresh new energy, encouraging more South Australians and visitors to spend time in the precinct – the retail heart of South Australia.”

Tom McCready, Executive Program Manager Public Realm said that the catenary system will provide high quality street lighting.

“The catenary lighting will provide a visual effect of ‘floating’ lights along Rundle Mall.

“It will add ambience and atmosphere to the Mall with feature lighting, as well as providing increased levels of lighting for safety and visibility.

“The lighting will be supported by fixtures on buildings and spires at each end of the Mall. The lights are energy efficient long-life LEDs. In addition, directional lighting from the spires will illuminate the entrances and feature / heritage buildings at the eastern and western ends of the Mall.

“Council and the Project Team wishes to thank those property owners who permitted the fixing of the catenary lighting to their properties and the continued support from the retail community throughout the redevelopment.”

The catenary lighting will be completed by 14 October 2015.
