City of Adelaide welcomes marriage equality

The City of Adelaide welcomes the success of the Yes vote and to celebrate marriage equality, will waive the site fees for all wedding ceremonies in our Park Lands and Squares from 1 January until the end of June next year, should marriage equality become law.

The Park Lands are a popular venue for weddings, particularly over spring and summer. Some sought after wedding ceremony locations include Veale Gardens, Brougham Gardens, Bonython Park River Bank and other sites on the River Torrens, in particular Angas Gardens and Grundy Gardens.

Lord Mayor of Adelaide Martin Haese said waiving site fees for all wedding ceremonies in the Park Lands was something the City of Adelaide could do to demonstrate its support for marriage equality.

“The City of Adelaide is proud to be a diverse, inclusive city and we have a long and proud history of leading the way in celebrating diversity, and this is a way we can honour that."

“We are very much looking forward to marriage equality becoming law so that our Park Lands, which are much-loved and used for wedding celebrations, can be a place for all to celebrate their love and commitment to each other. “The Federal Electorate of Adelaide recorded the State’s highest Yes vote of 70.1 per cent and I am proud that our residents are such strong supporters of equality and the right of everyone to be able to publicly declare their commitment.

“In addition to this announcement, I am also excited to announce that Pride Walk at Light Square will be updated once marriage equality becomes law. “Last year, along with Dannii Minogue and former Councillor Robert Simms, I launched this permanent symbol to celebrate diversity in our community.

“The installation of this rainbow-coloured walk includes a timeline highlighting significant milestones and events in our state’s history, and this will be one such milestone.
