City of Adelaide spreading Christmas cheer

Following the Christmas Pageant and now that Father Christmas is in town, City of Adelaide has today spread some Christmas cheer by rewarding some lucky drivers who complied with on-street parking controls with a ten dollar discount voucher for use in any UPark during December 2016 and January 2017.

City of Adelaide Lord Mayor Martin Haese said that this was a way of rewarding those who did the right thing on-street as well as promoting off-street car parks as the best place to park for those who need to stay for longer.

“If you were one of the lucky drivers selected, City of Adelaide has thanked you with a UPark voucher up to the value of $10 for your next Christmas shopping trip.

“Complying with parking regulations ensures there is turnover of parking spaces which allows other city visitors to use the space for their needs. More visitors to the city supports our retail businesses and therefore our economy to prosper.

“There are 16.8 million possible parking opportunities annually in the city. Expiations for people parked illegally receive a significant focus yet they actually only represent one per cent of those possible parking opportunities.

“This means that 99 per cent of people parking in the city are doing the right thing and so we wanted to focus on the majority, say thank you for doing the right thing and reward them. As one of our Parking and Information Officers said, we would rather educate than expiate, so this initiative has also presented a fantastic opportunity for us to remind people why parking controls exist, and how it helps everyone when people comply with them.

“Our Parking and Information Officers handed out the vouchers as they moved around the city today. As ambassadors for the city, our Officers assist members of the public on a daily basis by providing information about the city and responding to requests for directions and assistance. Now they’re also bringing Christmas gifts to the people of Adelaide.”
