Christmas lights up in the City

The Christmas tree is already in position in Victoria Square/Tarntanyangga ready for the official lighting ceremony at 8.45pm on Friday 6 December 2013, featuring for the first time the new interactive energy efficient lighting that is sure to light up the city.

Acting Lord Mayor Dr Michael Llewellyn-Smith AM will be joined by ten year old Ethan and his family to count down and flick the switch lighting up the Christmas tree that’s in place for the thirteenth year running.

Due to capital works going on in Victoria Square, this year’s tree lighting will involve a small ceremony rather than the usual family event.

“Christmas is about giving and sharing and this year City of Adelaide is supporting Vinnie’s as our charity partner,” said Dr Llewellyn-Smith.

“We encourage people to come into the City over the festive season and enjoy all that this great City has to offer.”

People visiting the city right up until New Year can participate in a Christmas in the City Trail map competition for their chance to enter a draw to win an iPad mini.

Participants need to collect a stamp from a participating business in each of the four zones featured on the trail map, attach the stamps in the spaces provided and drop their completed entry into any one of the Council collection points.

This year Christmas in the City is supporting Vinnie’s which provides food and shelter to our communities less fortunate every day of the year through their drop in centres and community shelters.

Vinnie’s State President, Brian Spencer says people should be mindful of those experiencing disadvantage throughout the year but especially at Christmas time when they can often feel more isolated or alone.

“The money we raise contributes to some of the $770,000 in food vouchers and parcels, and a total of $2 million in assistance that Vinnie’s provides each year,” he said.

“Sometimes people don’t realise that anyone can donate even the smallest amount, which can make all the difference to the services we provide,” said Brian.
