Father Christmas has arrived and it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in the City of Adelaide. From lights and decorations to food and gift ideas, the city is the place to be for all things Christmas.

Adelaide Town Hall is once again being lit up this festive season with an animated Christmas projection display. The display is on every night from sunset until 12am weekdays and until 2am on weekends. There will be 22 different animations featuring traditional Christmas designs as well as images of the giant Santa at the Central Market, the Torrens paddleboats, the Three Rivers Fountain, and summer days at the beach.

City businesses are being encouraged to decorate their shops and window spaces to go in the draw to win a $5,000 advertising package in The City. The public can vote for their favourite display to be the winner of the ‘best dressed business’ award.

City of Adelaide has also produced a 36-page booklet featuring gift ideas, event information and shopping offers.

City of Adelaide Lord Mayor Martin Haese said that the city had Christmas covered.

“The city will come alive this Christmas with decorations and lights scattered throughout the city’s squares and streets, bringing festive cheer to the outdoors.

“We’ve worked with city businesses to compile a list of over 130 shopping offers and gift ideas, featured in the Christmas in the City program, available on our website. While you’re shopping in the city you could also receive a free reusable Christmas in the City shopping bag to carry your purchases home in.

“There’s plenty of fun for the kids too. Santa and his elves will be popping up throughout the city performing tricks, and the Christmas in the City App makes a welcome return, providing a unique and fun virtual reality Christmas experience.

“The special parking rates in the CBD and the extended trading hours in Rundle Mall, Rundle Street and the Central Market will make it easy for everyone to finish their Christmas shopping so they can start relaxing and spending time with friends and family.”

The giant Christmas Tree will soon go up in Victoria Square/Tarntanyangga ready for the lights to be switched on at 8pm Friday 2 December. From 6pm there will be entertainment, music, food vendors, activities and a free outdoor cinema.
