Adelaide Celebrates Marriage Equality
The City of Adelaide has today marked the legalisation of marriage equality with an addition to its Pride Walk in Light Square as a celebration of this historic event.
Pride Walk was installed in Light Square 2016 as a permanent symbol to celebrate diversity within the community.
The rainbow coloured walk includes a timeline highlighting significant milestones, people and events in the state’s history. The timeline is included within the unique colour bands, providing meaning and further connection with the LGBTIQ community.
Lord Mayor of Adelaide Martin Haese said that the passing of marriage equality into law was a major milestone for Australia.
“This is an historic time in Australia for the LGBTIQ community and for equality. The City of Adelaide has a long and proud history of leading the way in celebrating diversity, and this is certainly a reason to celebrate.
“The Federal Electorate of Adelaide recorded the State’s highest Yes vote of 70.1 per cent and I am proud that our residents are such strong supporters of equality and the right of everyone to be able to publicly declare their commitment. We are proud to be a diverse, inclusive city.”
Former City of Adelaide Councillor, Robert Simms, said, “I first initiated the Pride Walk back in 2015, so that there was a positive symbol of LGBTIQ pride and inclusion in the City of Adelaide. Adelaide has a proud history of LGBTIQ law reform and our city voted strongly for marriage equality in the recent postal survey.
“The Federal Parliament legislating for marriage equality is a key milestone in the fight for LGBTIQ rights in Australia. It’s terrific to see the City Council celebrating this in this way. I’m sure the Pride Walk will continue to remind people of the struggles of the past and also inspire us to continue to fight the injustices that remain.”
Emmanuel Cusack, SA Field Director, Equality Campaign, said, "It has been a tough road for LGBTIQ Australians, their families and friends. Achieving marriage equality enables us to move forward stronger and more resilient, knowing that no Australian has to ever live through this experience again.
“The YES Campaign salutes the City of Adelaide for building this rainbow walk in recognition of LGBTIQ Australians who have gone before us and paved the way for us to finally celebrate marriage equality."
In November, to celebrate the success of the Yes vote, the City of Adelaide committed to waiving site fees for all wedding ceremonies in its Park Lands and Squares from 1 January until the end of June if marriage equality became law.
“Waiving site fees for all wedding ceremonies in the Park Lands is a way that we can celebrate that anyone in Australia can now be married under Australian law,” said the Lord Mayor.
“Marriage is about love and commitment and we want to welcome everyone who wants to get married into our Park Lands and Squares.”

Pride Walk is located in the north-western quadrant of Light Square adjacent the Adelaide College of the Arts and includes new trees, relocated seating and other amenities for the community to enjoy.
