Tree planting and better streets a focus for the city in 2017-18

Up to 200 new trees will be planted in residential areas across the City of Adelaide as part of Council’s greening initiatives for the next financial year.

Lord Mayor Martin Haese says Council will invest more than $10 million in 2017-18 to improve many of the City’s main and residential streetscapes and laneways, with additional tree plantings a high priority.

He says the 200 extra trees will be prioritized for built up areas where there is little or no canopy cover.

“This is another practical demonstration of our commitment to a Carbon Neutral Adelaide and a big step towards achieving our strategic goal of planting 1,000 additional trees in the city’s urban areas by 2020,” he said.

“And while it makes environmental sense, it also contributes to Adelaide’s liveability.”

The Lord Mayor says residents and visitors alike will see a hive of activity across the city over the year as Council undertakes a series of localised street improvements.”

“People will start to see improvements across the city at all scales, from greener and more attractive verges and planter boxes in our streets, right through to the completion of important upgrades that enhance whole precincts.”

Key projects across both the CBD and North Adelaide include:

• Improvements to Gouger, Melbourne, O’Connell and Hutt Streets – four of the city’s main retail and dining thoroughfares
• Upgrade of the Waymouth Street footpath between Waymouth Place and Anster Street to create wider footpaths, add trees, and support the dining precinct
• Planning and delivering improvements to laneways including Peel, Gresham and Union Streets
• Design and installation of creative lighting to enhance the East End retail and dining precinct
• Completion of the exciting Hindley Street West upgrade
• Streetscape improvements in St Helena Place to include new street trees
• Landscaping and roadway renewal for Sturt Street
• Designs and improvements for streets around the Market precinct, including Market Street, Wright Court and Field Street
• First stage of upgrading Jeffcott Street (between Barton Terrace West and Buxton Street) to fix long-term drainage issues, and
• General improvements to Boulton Street.

The Lord Mayor said many of these planned improvements had been developed through consultation with
local precinct groups, businesses and residents.

“Together with our plans to improve the City’s transport links, community facilities and Park Lands, these
projects are aimed at making Adelaide a smarter, greener, more liveable and creative city.”
