Transforming city walls into vibrant public artworks

City property owners looking to turn their walls into public artworks now have an easy way to connect with and commission artists, with the launch of the Adelaide Art Walls website.

The process is easy. Artists register to showcase their work on Adelaide Art Walls, while property owners simply search by artist or style to find a match that suits their space – then contact the artist direct to discuss potential commissions.

Enhancing Adelaide’s reputation as a ‘Creative City’ is one of the cornerstones of the City of Adelaide’s 2016-2020 Strategic Plan and through this new public art initiative, Lord Mayor Martin Haese said the city community now had a unique way to contribute to the creative, cultural and artistic fabric of the CBD and North Adelaide.

“Art can be experienced anywhere and when it’s visible in a public arena like a city laneway or street, that space is transformed into a destination,” said Lord Mayor Haese.

“Whether you specialise in murals, paintings or 3D artworks, I encourage artists to register with Adelaide Art Walls as soon as possible. Likewise, if you are a city property owner with a blank wall that could benefit from a creative lift, visit the website and explore the possibility of activating that space through art.”

Among the first artists to register with Adelaide Art Walls was South Australia’s Vans the Omega – creator of popular street art works in the Adelaide Central Market, outside Adelaide Central YHA in Waymouth Street and at 10 Stafford Street.

“Initiatives like Adelaide Art Walls are important in promoting local artists and connecting them with building owners, in order to grow and thrive here in Adelaide together,” said Vans the Omega.

Adelaide Art Walls also provides valuable links to funding opportunities available through the City of Adelaide’s Arts and Cultural Grants Program and information about Development Approvals, permits and insurance requirements.
