Rooftop Activation - The Sky’s The Limit

The content of this media release is over six months old and may no longer be current.

City of Adelaide is calling for expressions of interest (EOI) to activate the rooftop of the Grote Street Upark. The newly opened EOI seeks visionaries, entrepreneurs and business owners to submit their ideas, which will need to be commercially viable, to activate the space for up to three years.

Grote Street Upark rooftop, located at 82 Grote Street in the Market District, was transformed into an open air bar during a recent Fringe Festival and became very popular. It has also been used as a temporary rooftop cinema which was well patronised.

“This is an opportunity for someone with a great idea they want to try out for two to three years, to have a go and make this space one people flock to, but it will require some creativity and innovation,” said Lord Mayor Martin Haese.

“It’s not often a space like this becomes available in the CBD, where the sky is literally the limit. We’ve received some good ideas already and we are really keen for others to put their ideas forward too.

“The area is reasonably large, the equivalent of more than 60 standard car parking spaces, and really could be used for just about anything. It’s adjacent one of the largest banks of solar PV panels in the city, which lends itself well to some kind of eco-tourism or sustainability related business or activity,” he said.

“Safety, attraction and viability will all play key roles in determining the final use for the space, so I really do encourage anyone with a great idea, supported with a solid business plan, to head to the tenders sa website and submit their expression of interest.”

Council administration will evaluate and assess expressions of interest based on a set of key criteria focussing on place-making, environmental management, commercial viability, infrastructure requirements and potential for success.

Working with the successful applicant, Council will assist in creating an attractive space that best suits the needs of the community, and encourages city vibrancy.
