Reconciliation Plan Now Available To The Community

The City of Adelaide values its culturally diverse community and is committed to extending the process of reconciliation in partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.

A key part of our commitment is the implementation of the Stretch Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) 2018-2021, which is now fully endorsed by Council and available to the community.

Lord Mayor of Adelaide Martin Haese, who is also dual-chairperson of Council’s Reconciliation Committee, said that with National Reconciliation Week underway, it presents a great opportunity for the community to learn more about the plan.

“Our plan outlines 50 actions toward reconciliation and consolidates the City of Adelaide’s long-standing commitment to reconciliation,” said the Lord Mayor.

“A significant amount of work has gone into the plan over nine months and it is a document that Reconciliation Australia has described as nation-leading.

“Our feedback is that it is a truly ambitious piece of work which ultimately displays the City of Adelaide’s respect and commitment to the space of reconciliation.”

The Council's reconciliation initiatives have been combined into a single plan using Reconciliation Australia's RAP template. The Plan is registered with Reconciliation Australia.

Some of the key RAP actions include;

• Undertaking a Kaurna cultural mapping project to capture sites of significance in the City and North Adelaide from which informed decisions can be made by Council in relation to land use
• Supporting Aboriginal businesses to be developed and sustained
• Encouraging and supporting sustenance and growth of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages
• Utilising City of Adelaide’s UNESCO City of Music status to support and promote Aboriginal and
• Torres Strait Islander musicians
• Leading a conversation with other South Australian councils and the Local Government Association to identify ways to increase the representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in local government.
