North-South Bikeway Progress Update

Work has been completed on the southern section of Adelaide’s North-South Bikeway, with a second section due to be finished soon.

Lord Mayor Martin Haese today provided an update on progress with the construction of bike-friendly pathways that will eventually link up from Unley through to Prospect.

The Lord Mayor confirmed that work on upgrading and making significant improvements to the section of Frome Street between Wakefield and Carrington Streets was now complete, with sections of existing kerbing replaced with flush kerb designs and the addition of greenery to enhance the look of the street.

“What is so impressive about this section is that while contractors have been busy at work further north, City of Adelaide crews took the opportunity to complete this work at the same time, with much of it completed during the holiday period,” said Martin.

“Our people have done some tremendous work that they are rightly very proud of, and I received some excellent feedback from cyclists about the improvements when I recently inspected the bikeway.

“Further north on Frome Street, finishing touches are being applied to enable the formal opening of the exciting new section between Grenfell and Pirie Streets soon.

“Each of the sections see materials used to distinguish the bikeway from the road and footpath. We have an exposed aggregate bikeway that improves the experience for drivers, riders and pedestrians, visually separating the bikeway from the road.

“We have seen unattractive white concrete kerbing replaced with a flush kerb design, and garden beds that add more plants and trees to the bikeway.

“This project is great news for those who ride bikes, for business owners, property owners, motorists and pedestrians. There is no doubt this project is providing the city with the type of high-quality bikeway design we all deserve.

“I’m proud of how we are delivering an improved design, further greening and better traffic flow, while providing sufficient car parking along the route.

“I look forward to the bikeway extending further north later this year to the new city high school under construction and to North Adelaide.”

The City Bikeways project is being developed in partnership between the City of Adelaide and the State Government.
