Have Your Say on the Future of Rymill Park

Engagement for projects in Rymill Park / Murlawirrapurka (Park 14) is underway, which includes the draft Master Plan and draft Community Land Management Plan for the park.

The Master Plan has been co-funded and developed in partnership between the State Government and the City of Adelaide. It identifies detailed actions to achieve a long-term vision for the look and feel of the park. It also enables Council to plan and implement staged improvements to the park.

The Master Plan proposes either:

• retaining the lake as an open ornamental feature for small scale boating activity, using recycled water
• or converting it to a vegetated wetland which would be semi-ornamental, filter stormwater, and be more resilient to climate change.

Both options retain the footprint of the current lake and island.

The Master Plan also includes the creation of an inclusive playspace (named after Quentin Kenihan and funded by the State Government). It also proposes strengthening and creating new event spaces, improving pathways, reinforcing the park’s landscape character, and creating a Place of Reflection to commemorate the Stolen Generations.

Community Land Management Plans (CLMPs) are used by the City of Adelaide to manage the use and enhancement of the Park Lands for which it is the custodian. The revision for this park includes the new playspace, possible changes to the lake and to dog management.

The CLMP directly references the Master Plan and its proposals. It also considers the Master Plan’s actions within the overall management direction.

Deputy Lord Mayor Houssam Abiad expressed his support for the draft Master Plan’s proposals and actions saying it would add value to the precinct and be a real attraction.

“I think we should do all we can to encourage activation of the Park Lands and having a vision like this will help attract people to the park, which is exactly what we need to see,” said the Deputy Lord Mayor.
