ANZAC Day in the City of Adelaide - 2019

Youth Groups from across South Australia will participate in the ANZAC Eve Vigil at the South Australian War Memorial commencing on Wednesday evening at 6pm and running until the start of Thursday’s Dawn Service.

The Dawn Service will be held at the South Australian National War Memorial at 6am. Following the Service, the ANZAC Day march, led by veterans, serving personnel and descendants of veterans will start at 9.30am in Hindmarsh Square, head west along North Terrace and turn right on to King William Road, culminating with a service at the Cross of Sacrifice at 11.45am in Pennington Gardens East.

This service provides a significant finale to the commemorations, with the Dawn Service representing a funeral, the march representing the walk to the grave site and the service at the Cross of Sacrifice representing the burial.

The ANZAC Day Hub at the Torrens Parade Ground will be open from 5am until 6pm and is a free entry, family-friendly event with live entertainment, food and drinks, and games of Two-Up.

Lord Mayor of Adelaide Sandy Verschoor said that ANZAC Day is an opportunity to pay respects to those who have served their country and those who continue to do so.

“I urge the community to take the time to reflect on those who have sacrificed their lives by attending the Dawn Service and watching the march, and then stay around to take part in the commemoration activities in the city.

“Following the Dawn Service, the community is invited to view the ANZAC Centenary Memorial Walk along Kintore Avenue, and visit the ANZAC Day Hub at the Torrens Parade Ground where they might like to enjoy some refreshments and a game of Two-Up.

“The ANZAC Centenary Memorial Walk serves as a permanent acknowledgement to the sacrifice of all Australians affected by war.

“There are also many other ANZAC Day memorial services in the City of Adelaide and I encourage everyone to attend a service this year.”

The Union Hotel on Waymouth Street is keeping up its tradition with the annual ANZAC Day Street Party starting at 10am, with music and entertainment throughout the day from Cornsey’s Allstars, Salt & Pepper Swing Band, SA Pipes & Drums and Mt Barker Pipes & Drums.

Food stalls and boutique beer and wine will provide refreshments and the annual Legacy Foundation fundraising BBQ will be on site to raise funds to help support the important works of Legacy.

Rundle Mall will be open from 12 noon until 5pm so people can enjoy brunch at one of the restaurants and cafes open in the city before shopping in the Mall.

Visitors to the city can also help raise funds to support former and serving members of the Australian Defence Forces. Selected car parks adjoining Rundle Mall will donate 50 cents per visit (from 12 noon to 6pm) to support the ANZAC Appeal. All UParks will charge a flat $8 fee (except Central Market where a $7 flat fee will apply).

Due to the road closures for the ANZAC Day March, Gawler UPark will not open until midday. The closet UParks open before midday are Rundle Street and Topham Mall UParks.

A number of buses will be detoured on the day, including the free City Connector service which will run along Frome Road between 5am-12pm (98A City Connector Anticlockwise service) and Kintore Avenue between 12-4pm (98C City Connector Clockwise service).

Adelaide Metro will run extra services on ANZAC Day to get people to and from the Dawn Service and the march. Free travel is available on all Adelaide Metro buses, trains and trams for past and present military personnel, people wearing service medals and people carrying a war veteran’s identification card. There will be a Digger Shuttle running from the Cross of Sacrifice to Victoria Square/Tarntanyangga every 15 minutes after the march from 12:15 pm to 1:30 pm.
