City of Adelaide Councillors are set to endorse the City of Adelaide 2020-2024 Strategic Plan at Council next week.

With an aspirational vision for Adelaide to be the world’s most liveable city, the plan will guide the projects, services and annual budgets of the City of Adelaide through to 2024.

Council’s vision of “Adelaide: the most liveable city in the world” will be supported by the following key community outcomes:

  • Thriving Communities: The City of Adelaide will be active in fostering the wellbeing of our communities.
  • Strong Economies: Council will leverage our Ten Gigabit connectivity and keep business costs low to ensure Adelaide is globally-recognised as an affordable and exciting place of choice to do business.
  • Dynamic City Culture: Council will celebrate our diverse community, culture and creativity.
  • Environmental Leadership: Our leadership will see us become a Carbon Neutral city and manage our energy, water and waste in a sustainable way, supporting our transition to a greener city.

Lord Mayor Sandy Verschoor said the document is underpinned by Guiding Principles and Priorities to continually improve our governance and maximise community benefit.

“Adelaide will pursue exciting new opportunities to attract and retain businesses, grow sustainable communities and celebrate our dynamic city culture,” said the Lord Mayor.

“This is a plan that will see us continue to be globally recognised as an affordable and innovative city that is also safe, welcoming and connected.

“We will achieve all of this through bold leadership and strong strategic partnerships that help us meet new challenges and take on exciting new opportunities.”

Other items to be discussed at the meeting include a proposal for atmospheric lighting for Melbourne and O’Connell Streets in North Adelaide, looking at alternatives to fireworks for Adelaide’s New Year’s Eve, and a Kaurna Community Hub in the Park Lands.

Also on the agenda is a proposal to honour female leaders in the City of Adelaide by hanging portraits in the Chamber of six prominent female leaders who have helped shape the city and state in significant and unique ways. This includes commissioning a portrait of the first female Lord Mayor in Australia, Wendy Chapman AM.

“Recently we noticed that apart from a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, all the portraits on display in the Council Chamber were of men.

“The 125th anniversary of Women’s Suffrage in South Australia in December 2019 created momentum to more proactively honour the leadership and achievements of women within the City of Adelaide.

“We can do this by exploring opportunities to celebrate women who have made a significant and unique contribution to the city and state by raising their profile within the Adelaide Town Hall, specifically in the Council Chamber.”

Councillors will also bring a range of motions to the Council meeting on behalf of the community. More information is available in the agenda.
