50 Years Of Australian Dance Theatre And Street Dance Sessions For Kids

A large perspex ice cube in Victoria Square / Tarntanyangga will showcase some of the talents of members of the Australian Dance Theatre (ADT) tomorrow in celebration of 50th year of the dance company.

ADT will also be hosting two school holiday workshops for 13-17 year-old students in the Adelaide Meeting Hall on the 9 October where aspiring dancers of all persuasions can learn the basics of breaking, popping, tutting and tumbling mixed with a measure of contemporary and classical dance.

Well-known for its fusion of dance styles including street, contemporary, ballet, breaking and gymnastics, the company will be on display on Victoria Square/Tarntanyangga tomorrow ahead of the school holiday workshops.

The large transparent cube placed in the Square enables people to experience a 360 degree view of live dance as the ADT ensemble performs for audiences in the Square.

Lord Mayor Martin Haese, who is in the midst of celebrating 175 years of the City of Adelaide, and a great supporter of the arts, is pleased that ADT has chosen the city’s civic meeting place to showcase and celebrate 50 years of Australian Dance Theatre.

“Victoria Square / Tarntanyangga is the traditional meeting place for Adelaide’s people, and continues to be a cultural hub, so it’s fitting that our very own home-grown and now internationally renowned dance theatre company marks its 50th anniversary with this unique performance in the centre of our great city,” said Lord Mayor Martin Haese.

“Like many things in Adelaide, ATD grew from a visionary idea into one of the most well-respected and well known Dance Theatre troupes in the world.

“Who knows when the next Robert Helpman or Kira Bousloff will be discovered – it could even be at one of the school holiday workshops in the Town Hall,” said Martin.

The workshops, both held on Friday 9 October, will be hosted by ADT professional dancers Zoe Dunwoodie and Michael Ramsay. The first session is from 10am – 12 noon and the second 2pm – 4pm and cost $15 per person and spaces are limited.
