This year February 16 is the first day of the Lunar New Year in the Chinese calendar, with 2018 marking the Year of the Dog.


In the City of Adelaide, we are celebrating the Lunar New Year with the community with festivities full of vibrant sights, sounds and Chinese culture. The streets will come alive with dancing, lively parades, the famous Lion Dance and plenty more! Try your hand at cultural activities such as oriental fan making, embrace traditions like the giving of Hong Bao / Red Envelopes, and sample delicious cuisine at the wide range of community events. Summer in the City is in full swing, making it a wonderful time to get out and about and experience the 2018 Lunar New Year celebrations in style!

Lunar New Year Feasts

As Lunar New Year approaches, many are celebrating with a lavish feast. ‘Lucky food’ is a must around this time to bring good luck for the coming year. Dumplings and spring rolls symbolise wealth, fish is believed to increase prosperity, and noodles bring longevity! We have searched the city's streets for the best yum cha restaurants to treat the taste buds AND bring you good fortune. There is also a schedule of restaurants who will be performing Lion Dancing over the first Lunar New Year weekend.

Chinatown Adelaide Lunar New Year Street Party

2018 is the 15th anniversary of the Lunar New Year Street Party held in Chinatown.

​Thousands will flock to Chinatown (Moonta Street) and Gouger Street on Saturday 17 February for the 2018 Lunar New Year Street Party celebrating the Year of the Dog.

​This free community event showcases Asian culture and tradition with live music, dance performances, martial art displays, food, drinks, kids’ entertainment, lion dancing, fire crackers and lots more!

Adelaide Casino Lunar New Year

New Year, New Fortunes Await

Celebrate the arrival of the Year of the Dog at Adelaide Casino with a month of festivities starting 31 January.

Adelaide Casino will be dressed in a festival theme, with live entertainment including lion dances. Our award-winning restaurants will also be celebrating with menu specials at Sean’s Kitchen, Madame Hanoi and more.

The centrepiece of the celebrations will be a Lunar New Year light show on the grand dome in Marble Hall. Created by world-renowned new media artist Joe Crossley, this is a must-see and will showcase Adelaide Casino like nothing before it.

Chinese New Year Concert

Presented by Adelaide Symphony Orchestra In association with Adelaide Festival Centre

A concert that unites cultures through the power of music.

This concert of popular masterworks and traditional Chinese favourites celebrates the coming together of Australian and Chinese sounds with acclaimed artists from Australia and direct from China.

Featuring the talents of Australian didjeridu virtuoso, William Barton, drummers from the Shanghai Empireast Culture Group and making their Adelaide debut, pianist sensation, Warren Lee and Soprano Yafen.

Also on the program is the Australian Premiere of a specially commissioned cross-cultural work, Rooster Fanfare which premiered at the historic AFL match in Shanghai in May 2017.
