On Saturday 23 January 1869, about 500 locals attended the very first market day put on by a handful of market gardeners on the site between Gouger and Grote Streets. From those humble beginnings, the Adelaide Central Market has grown into a world-renowned cultural and culinary cornucopia – attracting over nine million visitors each year.
To mark its 150th birthday in 2019, the Adelaide Central Market has produced a stunning 500 page hard-copy book that tells the fascinating tale of this city treasure through a series of recipes, anecdotes and inspired imagery.
Capturing the memories of traders from yesteryear and sharing stories from some of the Market’s most familiar faces today, ‘Adelaide Central Market: Stories, People & Recipes’ is as much a celebration of the city’s history and cultural evolution as it is of the food that makes the Market the city’s premier destination for multicultural cuisine and fresh produce.
Inside, you’ll find delicious seasonal-driven recipes from stallholders’ families as well as producers and chefs from around South Australia – all wrapped around heart-warming tales and hundreds of historic and modern images.
