City Christmas Lights & Decorations

This year’s Credit Union Christmas Pageant is kicking off the festive feel in the city, with more decorations to go up through the season, including Santa's Sleigh and a life-size Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer made out of LEGO® bricks.

As the city’s central meeting place, Victoria Square / Tarntanyangga is always a festive focus for Adelaide.

The Lighting of the Christmas Tree will happen on Saturday 1 December and will be the icing on the cake of a whole world of merry magic in this popular gathering space – thanks to the family-friendly Christmas Lights, Festive Nights event happening 15-23 December.

Across the city, colourful decorations, spectacular window dressings and the arrival of all of your favourite festive characters – will sprinkle seasonal joy wherever you wander!

Christmas Colour

City streets and laneways will be brightened by over 1,100 red bows and 130 colourfully wrapped poles, with over 250 festive banners and flags flying along the major thoroughfares.

Around Adelaide Town Hall and along Melbourne Street in North Adelaide, you’ll also spot a series of potted petunia ‘Christmas Trees’. Hats off to the City of Adelaide’s hardworking horticulturists who’ve nurtured all these pretty pops of colour from seedlings.

Festive Figures & Sparkling Lights

In celebration of the traditional meaning of Christmas, a Nativity Scene will be installed at the northern end of Victoria Square / Tarntanyangga in front of the Christmas Tree.

As the sun goes down, watch the Adelaide Town Hall light up. The gorgeous facade of this heritage building is bathed each evening in a merry red glow and the balcony dressed for the season with colourful baubles and garlands strung with fairy lights. Whitmore Square will once again be showing off its sparkly best with a Festive Lights display from 29 November.

There’s one festive feature you won’t miss in the city and that's the giant Father Christmas which is back gracing the Adelaide Central Market’s Grote Street exterior until mid-January.

The City of Adelaide has also worked with 50 local retailers to help them create eye-catching frontages with a professional visual merchandiser. Plus, Council has put a few currently vacant shopfronts to good use, making the premises pop with festive-themed window installations.
