Christmas Lights, Festive Nights

This year, Christmas in the city will be more magical than ever with a new festive playground arriving in time for the school holidays. Offering nine days of free family fun and the best spot to see the Christmas Tree, head to Christmas Lights, Festive Nights for a memory-making afternoon or to start your evening in town.

Sleighs, selfies and screenings!

 15 - 23 December, 4 pm – 9 pm.

Victoria Square / Tarntanyangga

Grab your kids, nieces, nephews and grandparents and head to the city to create some new Christmas memories.

Free to enter and open daily (4 pm – 9 pm) from 15 - 23 December, 'Christmas Lights, Christmas Nights' will see Victoria Square / Tarntanyangga transformed into a festive playground bursting with colour, live music, food trucks, Christmas movie screenings and a sleigh-load of merry-making activities.

The show-stopper will be the life-sized Santa Sleigh and Rudolph the Reindeer display made with over 130,000 LEGO® bricks.

Created by local LEGO® enthusiasts from Southern Bricks Lego User Group Inc, this highlight cannot be missed.

For the ultimate merry memory, slip into Santa's Sleigh from 4pm each day and get a photo for Instagram taken against the spectacular backdrop of the Christmas Tree. Or, just grab a selfie with the Santa Sleigh in the background outside opening hours!

FAQs

What time does the event start and finish?

The event begins at 4 pm, where you'll be welcomed by open-air Christmas music and carols . The lighting of the tree will happen at 8:30 pm with the event concluding at 9 pm nightly, except 10 pm on Friday 21 and Saturday 22.

What time do the Christmas Tree lights come on?

At 8:30pm each night.

Can we bring our own food / drinks?

Yes, however, we will have plenty of food trucks with delicious food and drink offerings.

Can we bring our own picnic rugs / chairs?

Yes, you are able to bring either picnic rugs or chairs to the event. There will be some seating provided across the lawn area and near the food trucks.

For the movie screenings, picnic rugs are preferred, because chairs may impact the viewing for others so if you do choose to bring some along, please be mindful of those behind you and sit towards the back of the site.

Is there a cost to attend?

Christmas Lights, Festive Nights is a free community event. Food and drinks will be available for purchase.

What time does the entertainment start?

All entertainment and activities commence at 4pm. 

What entertainment will be provided?

Think of this as a free festive playground with too much to do we had to make it over 9 days!

  • Life-size lego Rudolf & Sleigh from LEGO® bricks to sit in and have your free photo printed.
  • VR experience - enjoy your first or relive a white christmas, plus skip the line and book your free session online. 
  • Merry Movies: Home Alone 1 on Friday 21 December and The Lego Movie on Saturday 22 December. 
  • Enjoy different stage acts every night, from magicians and a range of family shows.
  • Night music, including carols, a Christmas DJ and acoustic tunes.
  • Roving performers like Christmas circus elves and two magical dancing Christmas Puddings.
  • ​Kids activities; side-show games, the Imagination Playground and LEGO® bricks free-play area plus face-painting on Saturday 15, Friday 21 and Saturday 22 December.

Can we bring our own or buy alcohol?

This is an alcohol-free event.

How can I get to the event?

Public transport is always a great and green option. Visit Adelaide Metro to plan your Journey.

Alternatively, there are carparks located through the city for your convenience, so please visit UPark for some of the locations available.

Will Santa Claus be in attendance?

Given this time of year, he is incredibly busy at the Magic Cave. So before the event, be sure to pop in to visit him and the eleves at David Jones in Rundle Mall.

Is the event dog friendly?

Due to the amount of families and children expected, we discourage bringing dogs or animals to the event if they are not service dogs.

Is the event accessible for people with disabilities?

Yes, considerations have been made to help make sure the event can be enjoyed by everybody. For example, there will be additional accessible toilet facilities, Auslan interpreters included on stage, ramp access around the site. Please note, the stage programming will be of a volume that may impact people with noise sensitivities. If you have specific questions in relation to attending the event, please contact the City of Adelaide and we are happy to assist.
