Adelaide currently has 42,000 parking spaces, the largest number of any capital city, and higher than Melbourne and Perth combined.
The City of Adelaide developed the Smart Move Interim Action Plan 2016-18 after reviewing the Smart Move Strategy, which is about finding a balance between parking and sustainable travel. It supports people who need to drive, and will improve infrastructure to encourage more people to walk, cycle or use public transport. The end result will be a city that is easier to get into and around, with cleaner air for all to enjoy.
Smart Move focuses on using innovative technology to improve customer service. The technology will support city businesses by optimising the use of the available on-street parking and encouraging turnover.
On-Street parking spaces are intended to provide short-term timed parking, ensuring vehicle turnover and equal opportunity for all drivers. There are various on-street parking options available, including approximately:
- 9,300 free time limit spaces;
- 3,000 paid ticket parking spaces; and
- 1,000 motorcycle spaces (motorcycle/scooter parking is not restricted to dedicated zones. Motorcycle/scooter users are permitted to park in any ticketed and timed parking bay).
There are also 22,000 commercial off-street parking spaces available.
Please be sure to check the parking signs each time you park. Parking signs regularly change and drivers should not rely on previous parking experiences.
