Vincent Street and Vincent Place Streetscape
Project status
Design has now been completed. Works are expected to commence in early 2025.
Why are we doing this?
Vincent Street and Vincent Place, near Park 17 and several medical services, are predominately residential streets located in the south-eastern quadrant of the Adelaide CBD.
Both streets have narrow carriageway and footpaths, with close frontages and overhead powerlines and Stobie poles throughout.
Both streets have been identified for streetscape improvements. The upgrades will address deteriorated road pavement, footpath, kerb and water table.
What are we doing?
The project will upgrade and install a variety of features to improve the amenity of the street to create a more appealing, accessible and safe street.
These features include:
- Creating a shared street to prioritise pedestrian and cyclists
- Improving access for emergency services, service vehicles and other larger vehicles
- Paving the footpath and roadway for traffic calming
- Installing a continuous pedestrian crossing at South Terrace and Gilles St
- Greening with new street trees, improving shade and amenity
- Establishing planted gardens beds
- Installing an automatic irrigation system
- Integrating Water Sensitive Urban Design and Greening principles
- Retention of car parking (number and arrangement)
- Installing new energy efficient streetlights to improve nighttime safety
- Improving existing underground stormwater infrastructure
- Allowing undergrounding of overhead powerlines to be considered in the future where appropriate
When are we doing it?
Construction is expected to commence in early 2025.
Community feedback
City of Adelaide has undertaken engagement with the residents, property owners and users of the street in mid-2018.
The feedback received included:
- Concern with traffic using Vincent Street as a short-cut and travelling too fast;
- Lack of pedestrian amenity, including trees;
- Safety and restrictions associated with overhead powerlines;
- Compromised access for waste management and other emergency vehicles; and
- Improvements needed to public lighting of the streets.
The project was then put on hold due to budget constraints associated with the solution that included undergrounding of overhead powerlines and shared street.
The City of Adelaide re-commenced the project in FY2023/24. A new concept design was developed and shared with the community:
- Letter drop (mid-March – early April 2024)
- Community briefing session (3 April 2024)
