Victoria Square / Tarntanyangga Flagpole Renewal
Project status
Construction Phase
Project overview
The City of Adelaide is renewing the two iconic flagpoles in Victoria Square / Tarntanyangga to ensure they continue to stand proudly in the heart of the city for many years to come.
The project will deliver new, like-for-like flagpoles that meet current engineering standards, supporting the ongoing display of national, state and community flags in this important civic and ceremonial space. Temporary strengthening works have already been completed to maintain the poles while design and planning are finalised.
Why is this project happening
The flagpoles are long-standing features of Victoria Square and have served the community for decades. As part of routine asset care, specialist inspections were undertaken to plan for their renewal at the right time.
These investigations confirmed that replacing the poles now will provide the most reliable and cost-effective solution, allowing the City to maintain this landmark to a high standard without interruption to its civic role.
Regular condition checks will continue until the new poles are installed.
What we're doing
2025–26: Construction
The next stage will involve installing new flagpoles that meet current standards, with a new footings located close to the existing base. The current poles will be carefully removed once the replacements are ready, and all works will be scheduled around events and activities in Victoria Square. The story soundboards will be reinstalled on the new poles once they are finalised
Design approach
The new poles will be a like-for-like replacement, preserving the familiar look and civic character of Victoria Square. To manage the size of the structure, the poles will be removed and disassembled onsite to facilitate removal. They will also be transported to site in sections and assembled in place.
- New footings are being installed to meet current engineering standards 3m south of the current location.
- A maintenance pit will be created at the base of the pole to facilitate ongoing maintenance inspections as well as to allow moisture to drain from the interior of the pole to prevent corrosion.
- The new Poles and their maintenance pits will be surrounded by a natural colour concrete pad.
Timing
- Construction phase: 2025–26
- Concrete footing works: planned between 7 April – 7 May 2026
- Pole installation: following the curing period is anticipated to be June 2026
Timing may be adjusted to work around major events in the square.
Working with the community
Victoria Square is a vibrant meeting place and event destination. Works will be carefully planned to maintain safe access wherever possible, with signage and updates provided as the project progresses. Works will be undertaken during the day with some possible Saturday works to minimise impacts to city traffic and bus routes.
Benefits
- Modern, durable flagpoles designed for long-term performance
- Continued display of flags in a key civic location
- Improved reliability with reduced future maintenance
- Protection of a valued landmark for ceremonies and celebrations
