Strangways Terrace Public Lighting Renewal
Project status
Construction Phase
Project overview
The City of Adelaide is undertaking a full renewal of public lighting along Strangways Terrace (Montefiore to Ward St) to ensure safe, reliable and continuous lighting for residents, visitors and the community.
The project will replace ageing electrical infrastructure with modern, energy-efficient systems and reuse recently installed LED fittings where possible. This upgrade will provide better night-time visibility while reducing long-term maintenance and energy costs.

What we're doing
Works will include installing new poles and electrical infrastructure, connecting to the power network, and positioning lights to provide consistent coverage along the street.
City staff and the contractor will mark out final pole locations before construction begins to ensure good clearances from trees, driveways and footpaths and to minimise future impacts on the streetscape.
What the project includes
The renewal will involve replacing and upgrading key parts of the lighting network, including:
- lighting poles and fittings
- Updating old pole installations to current standards.
- New poles to provide unform and safe lighting
- Installing new 6.5m street lighting at the three speed bump installations to improve safety and visibility:

- underground cables and conduits
- in-ground electrical pits and protective devices
- connections from the SA Power Networks supply point
- cabling within each pole to the light fitting
Recently installed LED post-top lights will be reused where suitable, helping to reduce waste and project costs
Why this project is important
The upgrade will:
- provide safer and more consistent lighting at night
- improve reliability of the electrical network
- reduce energy use through modern LED technology
- lower ongoing maintenance needs
- support a welcoming and accessible streetscape
Protecting the local environment
Pole locations will be carefully chosen to avoid conflicts with trees, driveways and other infrastructure. Protecting established trees and minimising future pruning is a key part of the planning and construction process.
Timing
Construction is due to commence in March 2026 subject to prevailing site conditions and only as daytime works Monday to Friday.
The project is expected to be completed by June 2026.
Next steps
The project team is finalising power supply coordination and preparing for construction. This page will be updated with timing, access arrangements and any temporary impacts before works begin.
