Project overview
The City of Adelaide is renewing the road surface on South Terrace, between Morphett Street and King William Street.
These works will improve road condition, support safer travel and reduce the need for ongoing maintenance.
What we’re doing
The project includes:
- road resurfacing
- pavement strengthening using geogrid
- line marking
- traffic detector loop reinstatement
- temporary traffic management and signage.
The works form part of the broader South Terrace improvement program, which includes renewal and upgrade opportunities for road pavement, kerbs, water tables, footpaths, access ramps, stormwater, greening, pedestrian movement and cycling improvements.
Why the works are needed
South Terrace is an important city road used by residents, businesses, commuters and visitors.
The renewal will:
- improve road conditions
- support safer travel
- reduce ongoing maintenance requirements
- improve the public realm
- support a safer street environment.
When works are happening
Works are scheduled to start on Sunday 31 May 2026 and are expected to finish by Friday 5 June 2026, weather permitting.
Works will take place at night between 7 pm and 6 am.
Current schedule:
- Sunday 31 May to Wednesday 3 June – road resurfacing
- Thursday 4 June and Friday 5 June – line marking
- After main works – detector loop reinstatement, with less impact expected.
Traffic and parking impacts
South Terrace will be closed between Morphett Street and King William Street during night works.
All parking on both sides of South Terrace within the work area will be unavailable during the works.
During the day:
- the road will reopen to traffic
- driveway access will remain available
- reduced speed limits may be in place
- parking will remain unavailable until works are complete.
Access to homes and businesses
Driveway and property access will be maintained during the day.
Short-term access changes may be required at night while works are directly outside properties. The contractor will manage access safely and communicate with affected properties where required.
Noise and construction impacts
Road renewal works will involve trucks, machinery and resurfacing equipment. Some noise should be expected during night works.
Night works are being used to reduce disruption to daytime traffic and allow the works to be delivered safely and efficiently.
