Peacock Road Cycle Route

The City of Adelaide is delivering the Peacock Road Cycle Route to improve safety for people riding bikes and strengthen active transport connections into and out of the city.

This project will create a separated bike lane along Peacock Road, connecting the Mike Turtur Bikeway to the city and linking with the City of Unley’s King William Road streetscape upgrade to support a more connected cycling network.

Strategic alignment

The Peacock Road cycle route aligns with the City of Adelaide’s long-term transport and city-shaping strategies.

The project is directly referenced in City Plan 2036, which prioritises improving cycling safety and amenity and strengthening connections into the city from surrounding suburbs. It also supports the Integrated Transport Strategy, which focuses on creating inclusive, people-friendly streets and enabling more people to use active and sustainable travel options. In particular, the project contributes to Goal 1.3: Better travel choices for a more liveable city by delivering infrastructure that favours active travel and public transport. 

The Integrated Transport Strategy specifically identifies Peacock Road as a priority corridor for a quick-build cycle lane as part of a connected city-wide cycling network. The project also strengthens connections between the Mike Turtur Bikeway, Adelaide Park Lands paths, the City of Unley's cycling network and destinations within the city, making it easier for more people to travel safely and sustainably.

The Peacock Road Cycle Route project is jointly funded by the Australian and South Australian Governments as part of the National Road Safety Program.

We’re installing physically separated bike lanes along Peacock Road between South Terrace and Greenhill Road. The design focuses on improving safety and creating a more comfortable riding experience while balancing the needs of all road users.

Peacock Road is one of Adelaide's busiest cycling corridors and provides an important connection between the Mike Turtur Bikeway, Adelaide Park Lands paths and the city centre. The existing painted bike lanes provide limited separation between cyclists and traffic. The new separated bike lane will improve safety and comfort by providing physical separation from moving vehicles and creating a more attractive route for people of all ages and abilities. Previous separated bike lane projects delivered by the City of Adelaide have resulted in a measured increase in cycling activity, demonstrating that safer and more comfortable infrastructure encourages more people to choose cycling for commuting, recreation and everyday travel.

The project will introduce:

• a new separated bike lane along Peacock Road (adjacent the existing kerb line)
• improved connections between the proposed separated bike lane and the existing shared use paths
• upgraded pedestrian refuge crossing infrastructure (near South Terrace)
• new lane separation median to provide a physical separation between the bike lane and traffic
• changes to some on-street parking arrangements
• minor changes to traffic lane arrangements and updated line marking and signage where required

To provide the necessary space, optimise road safety and maintain the capacity of the road for the separated bike lane and associated infrastructure will take up some space currently used for parking. Parking will continue to be managed at different times of the day to ensure that traffic flows efficiently and safely by operating as a clearway during peak travel periods in the direction of travel. Detailed parking plans showing the proposed parking arrangements and how they will operate at different times of the day are available below.

Peacock Road is a very popular route for cyclists especially in the peak periods to and from the Mike Turtur bikeway (and other Park Lands paths) mostly along the tram corridor located south of Greenhill Road with 100’s of cyclists using this route every day. The existing bike lanes are sub-standard in accordance with current standards and provides limited protection for cyclists from passing traffic and motorists who have parked and open their doors into the bike lane. The proposed separated bike lanes are also anticipated to encourage further cyclist use which aligns with councils Integrated Transport Strategy and provides choice of mode for commuters and recreational cyclists to/from the city.

Construction is expected to start in August 2026, subject to procurement and final approvals.

Temporary impacts may include:

• changed traffic conditions
• temporary parking adjustments
• local access impacts
• construction activity and traffic management

Businesses and properties will be notified before works begin.

Peacock Road connects to cycling infrastructure being delivered to the south as part of the City of Unley’s cycling network upgrades, including works along King William Road.
These projects are being coordinated to improve safety and continuity across council boundaries and support a connected cycling network into the city.
